Cultural Advisor - Pasifika

Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand is the national provider of education services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing ākonga across Aotearoa. We work alongside ākonga, whānau, schools and communities to ensure learners thrive and achieve their full potential.

Our work is grounded in identity, language and culture. We honour Te Tiriti o Waitangi, promote New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL), and are committed to ensuring Pasifika learners see their identities, languages and cultures reflected across our organisation.

We are looking for a Cultural Advisor - Pasifika who is passionate about strengthening educational success for Pasifika ākonga and building meaningful connections with Pasifika communities.

THE ROLE / TE MAHI

Reporting to the Deputy Principal - Culture and Language, this role provides cultural leadership and strategic advice to help ensure Pasifika ākonga feel a strong sense of belonging and achieve excellent educational outcomes.

Working collaboratively across the organisation, you will:

  • Provide guidance to ensure policies, programmes and practices reflect Pasifika values and worldviews
  • Strengthen relationships with Pasifika learners, aiga and community groups
  • Support staff capability in culturally responsive practice
  • Champion learning opportunities that support Pasifika learner success
  • Contribute to embedding the Action Plan for Pacific Education across the organisation
  • Ensure Pasifika perspectives are reflected in organisational planning and decision-making

This part-time (0.2FTE) role includes national travel and can be based in Auckland or Christchurch.

ABOUT YOU / MŌ KOE

You are passionate about Pasifika education and bring strong cultural knowledge, relationship-building skills and leadership capability.

You will ideally have:

  • A tertiary qualification in education or a related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Experience working with Pasifika communities and education initiatives in Aotearoa
  • Experience in the New Zealand education sector
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills
  • An understanding of culturally responsive practice and equity in education
  • An openness to engaging with Deaf culture and NZSL
  • A full New Zealand driver’s licence and willingness to travel nationally

Most importantly, you bring authenticity, cultural insight and a commitment to improving outcomes for Pasifika learners.
