Speech Language Therapist (Outreach School)


ABOUT US /MŌ MĀTOU

Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education New Zealand is the national provider of education services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners. We are seeking a passionate and skilled Speech Language Therapist to join our Outreach School Team. This is a unique opportunity to work collaboratively with learners, whānau, educators, and specialists to strengthen language and communication outcomes and ensure every learner can thrive. This is a permanent, fulltime role based in Kelston.

THE ROLE / TE MAHI

As an Outreach School Speech Language Therapist, you will:

  • Gather and interpret nationwide data on the language and communication of Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in mainstream schools.
  • Deliver and interpret speech, language and communication assessments, both face-to-face and via telepractice.
  • Collaborate with Resource Teachers of the Deaf, whānau and educators to develop evidence-based, culturally responsive strategies that enhance learning and communication outcomes.
  • Provide professional development, advice and guidance to Resource Teachers of the Deaf to support students’ access to the curriculum and ongoing language development.
  • Travel as needed to meet students and teams across New Zealand (some overnight stays required).

REQUIREMENTS FOR THIS POSITION / NGĀ HERENGA MŌ TE MAHI

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Speech Language Therapy, or a Teaching Certificate endorsed in Speech Language Therapy.
  • Membership (or eligibility for membership) with the New Zealand Speech-language Therapists’ Association (NZSTA).
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building and collaboration skills across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Confidence using a range of communication modes and technologies, including telepractice.
  • A commitment to equity, inclusion, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and culturally responsive practice.
  • A willingness to learn NZSL and experience working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing learners or in special education settings.
